How to Get the Most Out of Your Curtains and Blinds This Winter

22 Jul 2020 By CurtainStudio

It’s no secret that Curtains and Blinds are a great way to keep the heat in on those cold winter nights, but did you know that how they are installed is just as important as having them?

When curtains and blinds are used in the most efficient way, they can reduce energy bills and can help to keep your home healthy, warm and dry.

Here are some of our top tips for getting the most out of your curtains and blinds, keeping your home warm this winter:

  • Ensure that your curtains are floor length, this will create a seal trapping the air between the window and the curtains, not allowing the heat to escape or for the cold to get in.

  • Make sure curtains fit tightly against your wall or window frame – it also helps if the curtain is wider than the window frame.

  • Add an attachable thermal lining or double track with a lining curtain in order to add some extra insulation.

  • Ensure you open your curtains and blinds during the day to let the natural heat of the sun in and close them before it gets dark. This will allow the heat of the sun to come in and closing them will ensure it does not escape.

  • Opt for Thermal or Triple-weave curtains when choosing a curtain type, as these are proven to be the best at keeping the cold out.

  • Make sure your curtains are lined and if they are not lined, purchase one of our attachable linings (Thermal and Triple-weave available) to hook onto the back of your curtains.

  • Double track: Hang a lining curtain on a second track in behind your curtains to provide extra insulation. These are a great option in behind Sheer curtains, meaning you can keep the beautiful Sheer look with the added bonus of insulation and privacy.

  • Honeycomb blinds/cellular shades have been found to be the best insulators, helping to create small pockets of air that keep the heat in. If you are looking for a way to decrease your energy/heating bill this winter, honeycomb blinds are known to be the next best thing to double glazing.

  • When installing blinds: make sure these have minimal gaps around them and the window frame. This ensures that no cold air can enter and no heat can escape.

  • Our Triple-weave curtains are mould-resistant, which will help to keep your curtains dry and your home healthy.

Give these tips a go for yourself and enjoy a warm and happy home this winter!
