Episode 1: The Gibson Family – A Coastal Home with a Whole New Feel

In the first episode of TVNZ’s Love It or List It NZ, we headed to the beautiful beachside suburb of Ōrewa, where Ben and Michelle Gibson were ready to breathe new life into their 1970s brick home.

With a busy family of four and a home in need of a refresh, the Gibsons wanted to create a light, inviting space that embraced their relaxed coastal lifestyle. Thoughtfully selected window furnishings played a key role in the transformation, adding softness, texture and a contemporary finish throughout.

Sheer elegance in the lounge

The lounge was all about creating a sense of space. Alex Walls – The Series Interior Designer chose Dash sheer fabric in Lunar from our Designers Collection, a beautifully textured fabric that brings warmth and softness to the room.

Hung close to the ceiling on curtain tracks in the colour Cirrus, the curtains feature a mini box pleat heading. The structured lines of the pleats align beautifully with the ceiling's linear detailing, creating a seamless, expansive look that draws the eye upwards and makes the room feel bigger and brighter.

Finished with Rockwall FR lining in Rice Paper, the curtains bring a beautifully tailored finish to the space without compromising its relaxed coastal feel.

A coordinated look for the master bedroom

In the master bedroom, Alex continued the use of Dash Lunar fabric, pairing curtains with a matching Roman blind to create a calm and considered space.

The curtains feature a classic box pleat heading on a Cirrus-coloured track, with Rockwall FR lining in Rice Paper finished with a mini box pleat. The same fabric and lining were carried through to a custom made Roman blind, installed as an outside fit for a clean, tailored appearance.

By combining two different window furnishing styles in the same fabric, the bedroom feels beautifully connected while making the most of each window.

A soft finishing touch in Bedroom 2

Alex carried this palette through to Bedroom 2, opting for Dash Lunar curtains with a classic box pleat heading.

Paired with Guardian Enviro lining in Macadamia, the curtains add a warm, welcoming touch to the room. The subtle texture of the fabric complements the home's refreshed interiors, while the structured pleats provide a timeless finish.

Simple and stylish in Bedroom 3

For Bedroom 3, a custom made Roman blind in Dash fabric, this time in the colour Mist, was the perfect choice.

Installed as an outside fit, the blind extends beyond the window frame for a neat, streamlined appearance. Its soft neutral tone sits beautifully within the room, while the Roman blind's clean folds offer a practical solution without overwhelming the space.

From the flowing curtains in the lounge to the tailored Roman blinds in the bedrooms, the Gibsons' window furnishings show how thoughtful fabric choices and considered details can bring a home together.
