Kids' Rooms. What should you choose?-The Interiors Group

Kids' Rooms. What should you choose?

When choosing window furnishings for kids' rooms, safety, comfort, and practicality are key. Blockout curtains or blinds help create a dark, restful environment for better sleep, while cordless or motorised options ensure a child-safe space with no dangling cords.

When choosing curtains or blinds for kids' rooms, there are several factors to take into account such as thermal properties, light filtering abilities, style and last but not least, FUN!

There is no need to sacrifice style and fun for practicality. We have a range of window furnishing options that combine both and will suit any style or function requirements for your little one’s rooms. Whether you’re after honeycomb blinds, blockout curtains, a double track or something stylish and playful, we have something for you.

What window furnishings have the best insulation for kids' rooms?

Honeycomb blinds are light filtering and they provide excellent insulation. According to consumer.org.nz, when tested with other types of blinds, they were found to retain 63% of heat.

The next best insulator was roman blinds which only retained 28% of heat. These blinds are super durable and are a great choice for kids' bedrooms as they're compact and super practical.... plus, they can be made blockout for light sleepers.

Which curtains and blinds are best for keeping the room dark?

Curtains, roller blinds, roman blinds and honeycomb blinds are all available in blockout fabrics which keep the light out, making it easier for your little ones to sleep in longer. Blockout curtains are also an excellent heat insulator.

Triple weave curtain fabric also helps to dim out light but will not provide a complete blockout solution. This option is great if you want room darkening properties but your child does not like complete darkness.

Blockout curtains can also be paired with sheer curtains on a double track for ultimate light control. A double track is a great option for ensuring privacy all day long for kid’s bedrooms.

What other options assist with climate control?

We have a great range of triple weave curtains in both custom and readymade to keep the heat in during the winter and the heat out during the summer, meaning you can keep your little one’s room at just the right temperature all year long. They come with a thick backing of dim-out fibres woven directly into the reverse side of the fabric providing ample room-darkening without a total block out.

What blinds are safe to use in kids' rooms?

The most child-safe blinds are cordless or motorised blinds as they eliminate any dangling cords that are a danger to children. Our honeycomb blinds have a cordless option and a motorised option. These hand-operated blinds have a small handle on the bottom rail for easy raise and lower adjustment. Motorised blinds do not have a cord and give you complete control of the blind at the touch of a button.

All of our roller blinds come with a safety device which we strongly recommend installing. All of our roman blinds use nylon ring tags that break under pressure.

What curtains are the easiest to clean and maintain?

Our triple weave curtains are machine washable, making them perfect for kids' bedrooms that are more prone to dirt and mess. Simply pop them in your washing machine on a cold wash, hang them out to dry and your curtains are ready to hang back up.

Have some fun with prints and patterns, while still making sure your little one’s window furnishings provide the thermal and light filtering properties they need. Get in touch with one of our expert design consultants today!
