Care & Maintenance

Dust, stains, grime and fingerprints can quickly accumulate without regular maintenance.

Don’t worry though, it won’t take too long to get your window furnishings looking spick and span again. Follow our care instructions below to get started.

Curtains

You can vacuum your curtains using a dust brush or other appropriate attachment to remove any dust build up. We recommend professional cleaning by specialist curtain cleaning companies for problem areas or stains you cannot remove.

How to Train Curtains

  • Stack each curtain to the side of the window, neatly placing the pleats
    into their folds.
  • An option to assist the pleat memory is to hold the pleats in place using
ribbons tied at the top, middle and bottom of the curtain.
  • These ribbons need to hold the pleats snugly, but loosely enough to
    avoid creasing the fabric.

Note: Different fabric compositions respond more quickly or slowly to training. Polyester fabrics while the most durable do have a tendency to ‘flare’ out at the hem. Drapery fabrics containing linen, cotton, rayon or viscose will crease more easily than polyester, this is the nature of these fibres.

Exposure
Please note that due to the harsh New Zealand sunlight and general
atmospheric condition, fabrics are subject to fading or movement. It is
recommended that you change out your curtains periodically – shifting the left
curtain to the right and right over to left this can help to avoid fading on leading
edges of curtains.

Stack Back
Where you can ensure your curtains are stacked back to each side when
open, and off the window so that the leading edges are not exposed to direct
sunlight

These curtains should be gently hand washed in cold water, taking care not to allow the coating to stick together. You should never rub or wring out the curtains as this could damage the lining.  Allow them to drip dry in the shade using hooks, rather than pegs. Be careful not to touch the backing whilst it is wet.

Press with a cool iron on the fabric side only.

These curtains should not be soaked, bleached, tumble dried or dry-cleaned.

All of our triple-weave curtains are machine washable, meaning there is no need to handwash or pay to get them professionally cleaned. Put them through a cold machine wash and hang them to dry in the shade. You can also choose to press them with a cool iron. Do not soak, rub, wring, tumble dry, bleach or dry-clean these curtains.

Simply give these curtains a cold handwash and drip dry them in the shade. Once they are dry, you can press with a cool iron. You should not bleach, soak, rub, wring, tumble dry or dry-clean these curtains.

Give sheers a cold, gentle handwash and drip dry them in the shade. Do not bleach, soak, rub, wring, tumble dry or dry-clean them. Press with a cool iron if desired.

Blinds & Shutters

As a common household dust collector, Roman Blinds should be regularly vacuumed with a dust brush or other appropriate attachment on a light suction setting. If further cleaning is required, we recommend professional curtain cleaning.

Training & Operating Roman Blinds

  • Roman Blinds need to learn a memory for where to fold and stack.
  • Pull cord or chain slowly and straight as possible when lifting the blind up,
this allows the Roman Blind time to settle into its folds.
  • Straighten any folds not sitting correctly to ensure the blind learns the correct memory.
  • For safety keep chains and cords out of reach of children.

Operating Roller Blinds

  • When opening and closing the blind, please keep the chain/cord control away from the fabric. This is done by operating the chain mechanism at right angles (perpendicular) to the blind. Note: chains pulled across the roller fabric will cause fraying.
This type of damage is not covered under warranty.
  • Never put any unnecessary pressure on the chain, wand or cord.
  • When opening a window behind a blind, always raise the blind first – do not push your hands through or past the blind as it is likely to damage the blind.
  • Keep windows closed on windy days as this can damage the blind and fabric.

Safety

  • Keep chains and cords out of reach of children.

Light Gaps

  • All Roller Blinds allow light to pass around the sides of the blind, even when blockout fabric is use.

Regular Care & Cleaning

  • Remove surface dust, by carefully vacuuming the blind with a low suction and appropriate attachment.
  • Clean spills or dirty finger prints using a damp clean white cloth. Do not
immerse any part of the roller blind in water.
  • Never use abrasive substance or solvents/industrial based cleaners.
  • Never use chemical cleaners

Brush off any dust using a soft white cloth, feather duster or a vacuum cleaner with a dust brush attachment on a low suction. Remember to tilt the slats up and then down (but not entirely closed) to reach the top and bottom surfaces. Do not use any solvents on Venetian Blinds.

Aluminium Venetian Blinds

Operation

  • Wand on left for tilting of slats, with cords on right for pull-up/ down, or vice versa

Cleaning

  • Clean Aluminium blinds by closing slats and using feather duster, soft brush or cloth. You can also
use a vacuum cleaner on low setting
  • Clean stains with damp cloth, or gently spray-clean and allow to dry thoroughly
  • Professional cleaning services can be employed using ultrasonic technology

Wooden Venetian Blinds

Operation

  • Separate cords for pull-up and tilting of slats
  • Slats tilt able to 180degrees-from clear view to privacy

Venetian blinds should be regarded as static blinds and only raised to clean windows and access the window latch. Assist the lift by guiding the bottom bar wherever possible

Cleaning

  • Gently remove dust from blinds with a soft, dry cloth or vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
  • Clean with a damp cloth, air dry
  • Do not scrub or use solvents or any abrasive substance to avoid damaging slat coating

Bamboo Venetian Blinds

Operation

  • Separate cords for pull-up and tilting of slats
  • Slats tilt able to 180 degrees-from clear view to privacy

Venetian blinds should be regarded as static blinds and only raised to clean windows and access the window latch. Assist the lift by guiding the bottom bar wherever possible.

Cleaning

  • Gently remove dust from blinds with a soft, dry cloth or vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
  • Do not scrub or use solvents or any abrasive substance to avoid damaging slat coating.

Operating Honeycomb Blinds

Corded:

As you operate the blind, the cord
lengthens. To lock it in place at the desired height, pull the cord sideways.
Another sideways pull will release the cord, allowing you to lower the blind to
your chosen level.

Honeycomb should be used in normal
humidity conditions and not in overly wet or humid environments which can cause mould or mildew.

Keep windows closed in windy conditions as this can damage the blind.

Regular Care & Cleaning

Regularly dust these blinds with a feather duster or vacuum gently with a low suction setting and a long-bristled attachment. Do not vacuum Luxaflex Elan fabrics.

If you need to spot clean, dampen a clean, white cloth with warm water and a mild detergent solution then dab the spot until it is gone. Be careful to not rub the spot. Allow the fabric to dry in its completely lowered position. Do not spot clean Luxaflex Alexa, Elan or India silks.

In the occurrence of an insect or spider going inside the cell, blow it out using a hairdryer on the cold air setting.

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Keep free of dust with a soft cloth, feather duster, microfiber wand or gently vacuum with a soft bristle
    brush attachment.
  • Use a small soft brush to dust cracks and hard to get at places.
  • Spot clean with a soft damp cloth when necessary – quickly wipe dry. If soap and water must be used then use a small amount of PH neutral soap in lukewarm water.
  • Regularly rotate Blades for even UV exposure.
  • NEVER allow water to remain standing on the shutters. If water is able to penetrate the surface it may
cause the timber to warp, create hairline cracks or damage the finish.
  • NEVER use a silicon based product, abrasives or harsh cleaning products for cleaning your shutters.
  • Repair any damaged surfaces to prevent premature deterioration.
  • Ensure that panels are properly fitted to catches or supports at all times.
  • Centre Tilt Rod - Always tilt the blades by using the Tilt Rod to reduce the chance of staples pulling loose.
Do NOT open the panel by pulling on the Centre Tilt Rod.
  • Bi-Fold Panels – When opening please remember to close the blades to prevent damage.
  • Sliding Panels – When opening please remember to close the blades unless the panels are designed to
    slide with blades open.
  • Regular vacuuming of Bi-Fold and Sliding tracks will keep them free of grit for easy action.

Please remember, even on well-maintained shutters all finishes will fade over time - fading cannot be
reversed or original tones rejuvenated.
