Great design is all about the details, and the Sentinel Homes New Plymouth showhome is full of ideas worth taking inspiration from. Designed to encourage homeowners to think outside the square, the home brings together beautiful materials, thoughtful design and plenty of personality.

Curtain Studio worked alongside the Sentinel Homes team to select window furnishings that complement the home’s aesthetic while adding softness, texture and everyday functionality. From textured sheer curtains that filter the natural light to honeycomb blinds offering thermal performance and room-darkening benefits, each choice was carefully considered for the way the space looks, feels and functions.

We spoke with Andrew Kuriger from Sentinel Homes Taranaki about the inspiration behind the showhome, the window furnishing choices and the design ideas they think are worth bringing into your own home.

Can you tell us about the thinking behind the New Plymouth show home?

We were looking to inspire our clients to think a little outside the square, we are a mid-market building company, so we are always on board for the journey when our clients want to do something a bit different.

How did the window furnishings fit into the overall aesthetic of the home?

We were looking to soften the spaces and introduce beautiful textures. I love the fabric choices, and the way the light comes into the home. It’s nice to create spaces people just want to linger in.

If you had to choose three ideas from this show home that people could take inspiration from, what would they be?

1. Materials - I love the use of different materials in the home, creating features people want to reach out and touch.
2. Good design - I love a home that almost entices you to want to look around, and I love that spaces function well for the way people live.
3. Go with your gut - I love that we have gone with something we wanted to do, it won’t be for everyone (and that’s ok), but as should our clients do the same. The homes I enjoy most are the ones we build that really reflect the clients tastes and personalities.

How did the window furnishings fit into the overall aesthetic of the home?

Is there a particular curtain, blind, fabric or treatment in the home that you think works especially well, and why?

I love the texture of the Retreat sheer curtains in the lounge room.

What made honeycomb blinds behind sheers the right choice for the bedroom?

3 things here - I like that they perform well thermally. They also fit so tight within the reveal, meaning you can really darken a room which is great for kid’s bedrooms. Finally, I quite like the tactile lifting of the blind, instead of having to use a roller chain. Great product!

Are there any window furnishing trends you’re seeing more homeowners wanting to incorporate into their builds at the moment?

Motorization is something we are seeing more of. Not through the whole house but more popular in large open plan spaces where there may be 5-6 or more blinds to open and close every day.

Also, I think people are taking more risks with patterns and texture.

What was your experience working with Curtain Studio on the window furnishings for the project?

Really good, we had an initial meeting down at Curtain Studios, looked through a LOT of options and narrowed down what we needed. We pivoted on a few products to get the budget to work and were happy with the result.

There was a curtain made to the wrong drop, which did hold up one curtain, (sometimes mistakes happen) but the process was handled really well. It’s when things don’t go to plan that you realise the quality of the people you’re working with.
