Thermal Curtains - Everything you need to know

What is a thermal curtain?

Thermal curtains keep the heat built up in the house in by creating a seal between the fabric and the window pane. Thermal curtains feature a layer of acrylic foam between the double or triple layers of fabric to provide insulation. The thermal lining prevents flow of air through the curtain, reducing cooling and heating cost.

What are the differences between thermal curtains and blockout curtains?

Thermal curtains are great for dampening light; however, they are not blockout. Blockout curtains have a 3-pass coated backing, making it harder for light to filter through. Thermal curtains have a 1-pass coated backing.  You can however, add a lining or blind for added light control.

Can you wash thermal curtains?

Thermal curtains should be hand-washed in cold water, taking care not the allow the coating to stick together. You should never rub or wring out the curtains as this might damage the lining.  Drip dry the curtains in the shade and avoid touching the backing when wet. Hang the curtains with hooks and do not use pegs.  Thermal curtains cannot be bleached or dry-cleaned. Press with a cool iron on the fabric side only.
